MESMS Digital Library!

OverDrive Digital Library

eBooks are increasing in popularity (have you seen Ms. Manzi reading her Kindle?), and there are many places other than our brand new digital library where you can go to find ebooks and read them online -- even if you just have a computer and not an eReader like a Kindle or a Nook or an iPad.  Check out the sites below -- this is great stuff!

C/W Mars Digital Catalog: an online library provided through C/W Mars (Central & Western Massachusetts regional library system), it provides free ebooks and audiobooks to library card holders; compatible devices include computers (Macs & PCs), the Nook, iPad, and even the Kindle.  There are tons of great free books here, including Alex Rider, Percy Jackson, Pretty Little Liars, A to Z Mysteries, and more!

International Children's Digital Library: a collection of thousands fairy tales, classics, picture books, and more from around the world; multiple languages available.

Open Library-Juvenile Literature: a collection of ebooks from authors who wrote from 1502 until now; of the 8100 ebooks, some (mostly classics) are available directly from Open Library to download and read online, but others require access to actual lending libraries (see OverDrive).  To find the books available online for free, look for the open-book-in-a-circle symbol on the bottom right-hand corner of the book cover: Open Library Icon

Many Books (for Young Readers): more than 2300 free ebooks, some new and some old, in various formats.

Project Gutenberg: perhaps the first ebook provider, now offering 34,000+ free ebooks, easily downloadable in a variety of formats.

LibriVox: free audiobooks to download and listen to; these books are all in the public domain (meaning their copyrights have expired).  Titles include Kidnapped! by RL Stevenson, The Secret Garden by FH Burnett, Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving, and Grimms' Fairy Tales.

Books Should Be Free: free audiobooks in the public domain; browse by genre, popularity, or language.
